The Rare Gold Band, from Blue Grass, VA, plays an eclectic mix of Bluegrass, Old Time, and Classic
Country music. While they are predominantly an acoustic ensemble, they include in their instrumental
repertoire, a steel guitar, expertly played by Billy Wheeler from Headwaters, VA, who is equally adept with
the 5-string banjo. John Simmons, from Blue Grass, VA, is the lead singer, guitar player and the leader
of the group. Rounding out the band is fiddler and vocalist, Hannah Johnson, from Keezletown, VA.
Fiddler, mandolin, and guitar player, Gene McConnell, is from Circleville, WV, and Bass Player, Chris
Wood, is from Sugar Grove, WV. Dwight “Gus” Cooper, from Harman, WV, occasionally joins the band
as a guest vocalist.
The Rare Gold band plays regularly at the Buttermilk Barn in Staunton, VA and is a popular group to
perform at Square Dances, Lawn Parties and other social events and fund raisers.
