Here's some history you may not have known!

The health contest was only held in 1953 and 1954. No similar contest was held in 1955 or 1956. In 1957 a baby show was organized with Dr. W.P. Fletcher acting as Master of Ceremonies. The event was held on Friday, August 30 at 11 a.m.

The following classes were made:

  • Healthiest baby under 1 year old
  • Daintiest Girl between 1-2 years old
  • Most Robust Boy between 1-2 years old
  • Cutest Red Head (under 6 years old)
  • Little Miss Highland (prettiest girl between 2 and 5 years old)
  • Master Highland (most handsome boy between 2 and 5 years old).

Terry Christine Colaw was named Little Miss Highland and Dale Hammer named Master Highland. It was noted in the fair guide, “You’re a winner, too, if you’re under twenty and accept your award: FREE POLIO VACCINE.”

1959: “The baby show added a Most Charming Duo class to the show, which included two brothers, two sisters, or sister-brother combination—both preschool ages.”

1960: “Baby show winners were: Healthiest—Douglas Puffenbarger, Andrew Corbett; Most Appealing—Marilyn Reynolds, Teresa Herold; Daintiest Girl—Julie Mullenax, Kimberly Swecker; Most Vivacious Boy—Michael Meeks, Paul Simmons; Most Charming Duo—Donna & Brent Obaugh, Mary Anita & Lynn Billingsley; Most Winsome—Ellen Swecker, Allen Thompson; Little Miss Highland—Betty Sue Hiner; Master Highland—Bobby Ralston.

1962: “The Baby Show committee received approval to change their name to the Kiddie Show”
